[Article] 批評の論理 The Logic of Critique

Before that... その前に…

I've just started Facebook and have no idea in which language I should write this blog from now. As long as this blog has been updated at Mixi and Gree (both are SNS in Japanese) alone, it was fine to keep this blog monolingal not really bilingual as its original aim. But now hmmm... I don't know... let's see... I'll try writing in two languages. Let's see how it goes.

Besides, today, I attended a meeting of the new project that I belong to from this school year and found colleagues there really really nice people. I'm very much relieved now. Hope some of them read similar journals and exchange some ideas.

Facebookなるもの（海外のSNS）を始めました。友人がアップしてくれた写真を見たかったためです。しかしここで問題が。MixiやGreeにだけこのブログがフィードされている分には日本語オンリーでかまいませんが、あちらにもアップされるようになった今、一体私は何語でこの日記を書けばいいのでしょうか・・・・・・とりあえずしばらく二ヶ国語ブログに挑戦してみます。後は様子を見てから、ということで。

ちなみに本日、今学期から所属するプロジェクトの会合に出ました。皆さん良い方ばかりですっごく安心しました。がんばるぞー。同系統の論文誌を読まれる方がみつかったら尚ありがたいのですが。

Okay, here's what I read today. :)
というわけで読んだ論文の感想です。

[論文] イランダスト, ヘンガメー. 2006. 「批評の論理」．『アーギュメンテーション』．20巻2号．133-148頁．

critiqueとcriticismの違い、critiqueとevaluationの違い、opinionとargumentの違い、positionとopinionの違いなどなど、かなりマニアックな定義に関する論文。

正直そこに厳密性を求めることの意義に疑問を感じます。一般人にはそんな違いわかりゃしないので、議論学の専門家同士で話す時にどう用いようと、日常での遣い方にどうせ引きずられてしまうような気がします。だって通じない言葉や誤解を招きやすい語彙は普通避けたいじゃないですか……

まあでも、面白いことは面白いですが。

たとえばcritiqueは否定的な意味に限らないよりニュートラルな語だが、criticismはより否定的な意味に遣われる、ということのようですが・・・・・・さしずめ日本語なら前者が「評論」や「批評」を意味するのに対し、後者は「批判」って感じ？

確かに、よくカントのThe Critique of Pure Reasonが、純粋理性「批判」と訳されるのに違和感を感じるので、厳密にはその通りなのだろうと思います。あとディベート限定だとCritique Perspectiveも元々のコンセプトはもっとずっとニュートラルな印象です。

けど、元々は良い意味だったソフィストという言葉が一度「詭弁家」という意味で定着してしまったが最後良い意味で使えなくなったのと同じように、今更Critiqueは必ずしも批判（というか反駁？）を意味しないと叫んでも無駄なのではないかと思います。

まあディベート馬鹿にはおかまいなしに楽しめる論文です。

First half of this article is trying to emphasize the differences between critique and criticism, critique and evaluation, opinion and argument, position and opinion etc...

To be honest, I don't see why it's important to distinguish them this carefuly. Vast majority of people don't use those terms "accurately" anyway. How can argumentation scholars alone use them for different meanings from the definition shared by public? Nobody wants to use terms which are clearly missleading, I suppose. Away too big discrepancy.

Well, I still enjoyed reading this though.

For example, it seems that the author thinks when criticism is usually negative, crituque is still neutral. It might be the difference between hihan and hihyo/hyoron in Japanese.

Indeed, when Kant's The Critique of Pure Reason is translated as "Junsui Risei Hihan", I feel some sense of incongruity. Perhaps that is because Kant meant a lot more neutral thing than hihan.

Having said that, when we look at the example of "sophist", it is clear that originally that word didn't have negative image attached. But simply because "sophist" is used a lot for insincere orators who abuse their silver tongues, it is difficult to use that word for original meaning without the negative associations. So, no matter how accurate the definition this article provides is, I guess people would avoid this term anyway.

Oh, well... any articles on debating are interesting for debate nerds anyway... :p
